What is Scholarship America and Dollars for Scholars?

Scholarship America has been developed to mobilize America, through scholarships and educational support - making post-secondary education possible for all students.

In 1958, an Optometrist in Fall River, Mass., had a simple but profound idea-if everyone in his community gave just a dollar to an educational fund, it would be enough to help nearly every student in the community who wanted to attend college. Dr. Irving Fradkin called his plan "Dollars for Scholars," and it has expanded into what, today, is the nation's largest non-profit, private-sector scholarship and educational support organization.

Since its founding, Scholarship America has distributed more than $2.4 billion to nearly 2 million students across the country through various programs including Dollars for Scholars® and Scholarship Management Services®.

What is South Eastern Dollars for Scholars?

South Eastern Dollars for Scholars® is an important organization run by a group of local citizens in order to encourage life-long learning by raising and distributing scholarships to students who reside in the South Eastern School District students.  Resident students who attend either Kennard Dale High School or the York County School of Technology, and plan to continue their education beyond high school attending two or four year college or a technical/trade school, may apply for scholarships.  A recent scholarship recipient writes, "The financial aspect of a higher education has been a concern of my family's since we first began the college search, and before your generous contribution, there was a question of me attending any of my first choice schools.  Now that I have received your assistance, and committed to one, I could not be more excited to see what the future holds for me."

South  Eastern Dollars for Scholars has awarded totaling over $970,000.  This was made possible by hundreds of community members serving at annual fundraising events and by the many generous contributions by individuals, businesses, and other organizations. In May 2020, 54 scholarships were awarded to 49 students for a total of $84,200.  The annual awards ceremony was unable to be held due to COVID, however, students were recognized and celebrated in a video.  To view the video, please visit:  https://youtu.be/WFuuihcSubs
